Golden Eagles Rebound With Three-Set Win Over Broncos

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team rebounded nicely from its lopsided loss on Friday with a three-set sweep on Saturday.
 
The Golden Eagles prevailed in three hard-fought sets over Cal Poly Pomona, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22, Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-2, 3-1 CCAA) retains a share of second place in the CCAA, one game back of conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino.
 
Cal State L.A. was coming off a three-set loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
 
Marquis Mora had 11 kills and four blocks to lead the Golden Eagles, while Natalia Gonzalez had 11 kills. The Golden Eagles only hit at a .034 percentage, but limited Cal Poly Pomona to just .010 hitting.

Cal State L.A. held a 32-24 edge in kills, a 9-3 advantage in service aces and overcame a 7-5 deficit in blocks.
 
Lindsey Poulos had five kills and six blocks for Cal Poly Pomona (3-6, 1-3 CCAA). Jessica Doerner also had five kills.
 
Zuzana Cizova had four kills and a team-high three service aces for Cal State L.A., while Amrita Tuladhar had 26 set assists, 12 digs and one ace.
 
All three sets were tight with the Golden Eagles getting the key points when they needed them.
 
In the opening set, the Golden Eagles rallied from a 20-18 deficit and eventually broke a 21-21 tie after kills by Chelsea Hamilton and Cizova and a block by Briana Fields and Hamilton to take a 24-21 lead. The Broncos saved one set point, but the Golden Eagles took advantage of a Cal Poly Pomona attack error to close out the frame.
 
In the second set, Cal State L.A. raced out to an 11-4 lead behind some strong serving from Cizova, who served for eight straight points to give the Golden Eagles an 11-3 lead. Cal Poly Pomona's Kristin McNeese, though, then served for six straight points to get the Broncos close.
 
Cal Poly Pomona eventually took the lead and had a 22-21 advantage after a kill by Poulos. A kill by Mora made it 22-22 and back-to-back kills by Gonzalez got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-22. An attack error by Cal Poly Pomona ended it.
 
The third set was just as tight. A strong serving run by Mora helped Cal State L.A. erase a 9-6 deficit and open up a 14-9 lead. The Golden Eagles were able to keep a lead the rest of the way, but Cal Poly Pomona chipped away and eventually closed to within 23-22 after a kill by Doerner.
 
Sade Greene, though, delivered a key kill to give the Golden Eagles match point at 24-22 and an ace by Tuladhar ended the match.
 
Cal State L.A. will now play its next four matches on the road, beginning with a contest at Cal State Monterey Bay next Friday.
