LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team put up quite a battle against California Collegiate Athletic Association co-leader Cal State Stanislaus before losing in its season finale.

 

The Golden Eagles lost three hard-fought doubles contests and could grab only two of six singles matches in a 7-2 loss to the Warriors Friday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-10, 3-7 CCAA) lost both meetings this season with the Warriors (8-4, 8-1 CCAA), who are tied for first in the conference with UC San Diego. Those teams will meet for the conference title on Saturday in La Jolla.

 

Cal State L.A. almost threw a giant monkey wrench into Cal State Stanislaus' title plans. All three doubles contests were close and Cal State L.A. led in all of them midway through the battles before falling by scores of 8-5, 8-6 and 8-5. The Golden Eagles were competitive in all six singles matches, two of which went three sets and another ended 7-5, 7-5.

 

The bright spot for the Golden Eagles came at No. 1 singles where Dora Kiss clinched the best record in the conference for No. 1 singles players by beating Verena Preikschas of Cal State Stanislaus, 6-4, 6-2. That completed a season sweep for Kiss over the 2009 CCAA Player of the Year.

 

Kiss, after dropping her second conference match of the season, won her last eight conference matches.

 

The Golden Eagles' other victory came at No. 5 singles where Lana Lamesic took control of the third set of a 6-4, 4-6, 4-1 (retired) win over Heather Cotter.

 

Adriana Espinosa battled back to force a third set before falling, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to Arina Polovnikova at No. 4 singles and Jillian Sangria lost a hard-fought battle at No. 3 singles to Katie Eng, 7-5, 7-5, 7-5.

 

Cal State L.A. honored its three seniors, Kiss, Espinosa and Lamesic in pre-match ceremonies.
