POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team was unable to overcome a rocky start in doubles in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match Tuesday.

 

The Golden Eagles dropped all three doubles matches – two of them extremely close battles – in a 7-2 loss to Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (7-9, 2-6 CCAA) dropped its third straight match, all to the top three teams in the CCAA.

 

Cal State L.A. fared better against the Broncos than they did in the teams' first meeting when Cal Poly Pomona posted a 9-0 win in Los Angeles on Feb. 18. In that match, Cal State L.A. came up empty in the doubles and then lost all six singles matches.

 

This time, Dora Kiss was able to avenge an early-season three-set loss to Cal Poly Pomona's Christie Lau at No. 1 singles. Kiss won Tuesday's match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Since losing to Lau in her first conference match of the season, Kiss has won seven straight CCAA singles matches, all at the No. 1 spot.

 

The other win was picked up by Marine Prevost, who outlasted Cal Poly Pomona's Michelle Stock at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 3-6, 10-2. Ironically, those two players also went to a third-set tiebreaker in Los Angeles although Stock prevailed in that meeting.

 

The Golden Eagles had close calls in two of the three doubles contests. Jillian Sangria and Adriana Espinosa lost a 9-7 decision at No. 2 doubles to Lau and Kaitlin Wooldridge, while Prevost and Lana Lamesic fell to Mallory Brady and Jennifer Buchanan at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

 

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with a match at Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will conclude their conference schedule on Friday with a home match against Cal State Stanislaus beginning at 11 a.m.
