LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team returned home for the first time this month, but the change of venue didn't help break its losing streak.
The Golden Eagles scored only seven first-half points and lost to Cal Poly Pomona, 61-41, Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-20, 2-17 CCAA) dropped its ninth straight game.
Cal State L.A. made only two baskets in the first half and fell behind by halftime, 32-7. The Broncos kept up the pressure in the second half and built leads as large as 32 points.
Cal State L.A. shot just 24.5 percent for the game, although the Golden Eagles did shoot 41.7 percent in the second half while outscoring Cal Poly Pomona, 34-29. The Broncos (18-5, 15-4 CCAA) shot 40.4 percent for the game and also had a large 44-28 rebounding edge.
Reyana Colson had a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead Cal Poly Pomona. Megan Ford had 15 points and three rebounds, while Jessica Duran had seven points.
Cal Poly Pomona knocked down 21-of-29 from the free-throw line, while Cal State L.A. hit 15-of-23, including 12-of-16 in the second half.
Cal Poly Pomona scored the first five points of the game and never looked back. The Golden Eagles got on the board on a basket by
Martina Njoku that made it 5-2, but Cal Poly Pomona went on a 17-1 run to open up a 22-3 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Terrell scored on a nice three-point play to stop the run, but Cal Poly Pomona got four late free throws from Colson to take a 32-7 halftime lead.
Shatori Dearman scored on a three-point play to pull the Golden Eagles to within 36-12, but Cal Poly Pomona kept the pressure on and eventually built a 55-23 advantage with less than seven minutes left.
Cal State L.A. was able to cut into the large margin down the stretch, but never got closer than 20 points.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
