SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team was on the verge of a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road win Friday night, only to suffer a stunning overtime defeat instead.
The Golden Eagles let a 10-point lead get away in the final minute of regulation and fell to San Francisco State, 85-82, in overtime in Main Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. held a 67-57 lead with 51 seconds left, but San Francisco State hit a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into the extra period.
The Gators carried their momentum into the overtime period and never trailed again after scoring the first four points in OT.
It was a bitter ending for Cal State L.A. (12-10, 8-9 CCAA), which slipped into a sixth-place tie with San Francisco State (15-10, 8-9 CCAA) in the conference race. The Golden Eagles fell behind by five points in the overtime period, closed to within one point and, after two Gator free throws, missed on a potential game-tying 3-pointer to end it.
Chris Fields had a career-high 36 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Dwayne Jones had 15 points and
Carl Hoffman had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Nefi Perdomo had 28 points for San Francisco State, including the key 3-pointer that sent the game into overtime. Perdomo was able to rebound a missed 3-pointer by teammate Marquel Hoskins, get behind the 3-point arc and beat the buzzer with the game-tying shot.
Cal State L.A. shot 49 percent for the game, while San Francisco State made 42.4 percent of its shots. The Golden Eagles were 26-of-33 from the free-throw line, while the Gators were 23-of-35. Cal State L.A. had 20 turnovers to 13 for the Gators and the Golden Eagles held a 40-36 rebounding edge.
Cal State L.A. led by as many as nine points in the first half before settling for a 32-27 halftime lead. San Francisco State took its first lead of the second half, after a three-point play by Hoskins put the Gators ahead, 49-46 with 7:36 to go.
The Golden Eagles, though, responded with a 15-2 run fueled by Fields to take a 10-point lead. Fields had nine points during the run to give Cal State L.A. a 61-51 edge. A jumper by
Chris Robinson gave the Golden Eagles an 11-point lead at 63-52 and a pair of free throws by Fields gave Cal State L.A. its biggest lead of the game at 65-53 with 1:34 to go.
Two free throws by Fields kept the lead at 67-57 with 51 seconds left before everything went wrong for the Golden Eagles. Hoskins scored on a layup to make it 67-59 and Cal State L.A. committed turnovers on its next two possessions. Hoskins scored on an offensive rebound and Aaron Trigg hit a 3-pointer after San Francisco State maintained possession after two missed free throws to make it 67-64 with 21 seconds to go.
Fields hit two free throws to make it 69-64, but Hoskins made a layup, was fouled, and hit the free throw to cut the deficit to 69-67. Fields then had a chance to put the game away, but, after making the first free throw, he missed the second and San Francisco State got the rebound. Hoskins missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left, but Perdomo ran down the rebound and launched his game-tying shot.
San Francisco State quickly opened up a 77-72 lead in overtime, but a three-point play by Fields made it 77-75. Hoskins made another layup to stretch the lead to 79-75, before
Dwayne Jones made a basket to make it 79-77. The Gators responded with another layup, this one by Perdomo, to make it 81-77 before a tip-in by
Leland Jones brought it back to two points, 81-79.
Perdomo hit a jumper to make it 83-79, but
Chris Robinson knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, 83-82, with 38 seconds to go. Hoskins was fouled with 11 seconds and made both free throws and a 3-pointer by
Duwayne King missed with one second left to end it.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
