LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to slow Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Golden Eagles lost the battles on the boards and the free-throw line and fell to the Broncos, 76-63, Saturday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (3-2, 1-2 CCAA) lost for the second straight night, while Cal Poly Pomona (3-1, 2-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten in the CCAA after the first full weekend of conference play.
Gretchen Tiernan had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Lacy Ramon added 14 points, three rebounds and seven assists.
Reyana Colson stole the show, pouring in a game-high 34 points to go along with 10 rebounds for a game-deciding double-double. Rosslyn Beard contributed 13 points for the Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 41-32 rebounding edge and also knocked down 27-of-37 free-throw attempts. Cal State L.A. was just 8-of-13 from the line.
Cal State L.A. was 24-of-59 from the floor (40.7 percent), while Cal Poly Pomona was 21-of-51 (41.2 percent). Both teams connected on seven 3-pointers.
The Golden Eagles trailed by just one point, 47-46, with less than nine minutes remaining, but Cal Poly Pomona went on a 18-7 run to open up a 65-53 lead with 4:11 remaining.
The Golden Eagles started well, jumping out to a quick 6-1 lead after 3-pointers by
Erika Ruiz and
Sonia Miller. The Broncos, though, responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead. Cal State L.A. got baskets by Ramon and
Lorin Hammer to take a 20-16 advantage, but the Broncos broke a 34-34 tie with a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer by Jennifer Bryant to take a 37-34 halftime edge.
The Broncos led the rest of the way, but Cal State L.A. kept within striking distance. The Golden Eagles pulled to within one point, 47-46, after a basket by Ruiz with 8:51 to go. A free-throw by
Shatori Dearman made it 49-47 with eight minutes left, but Cal Poly Pomona scored the next five points to take control. A jumper by Colson gave the Broncos a 12-point edge, 65-53, with four minutes remaining.
Cal State L.A. made one final run, getting a 3-pointer by Tiernan and a three-point play by Ramon to cut the deficit to six points, 65-59, with 2:15 to play, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get. Cal Poly Pomona hit its free-throws down the stretch to extend its winning margin.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Sunday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
