LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got off to a slow start Friday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State Stanislaus and never recovered.
The Golden Eagles allowed the first four points of the game and trailed the rest of the way in a 76-59 loss to the Warriors in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (5-5, 2-4 CCAA) fell behind 47-39 by halftime and then made only four baskets in the second half.
Cal State Stanislaus (6-4, 4-2 CCAA) wrapped up a road sweep by limiting the Golden Eagles to just 34.6 shooting for the game and just 16.7 percent in the second half.
Cal State L.A. committed 25 turnovers and that offset a 49-40 rebounding edge for the Golden Eagles.
Andreanna Marshall had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists for Cal State Stanislaus, while Christin Gowan had 17 points and five assists and Katie Busi had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Gretchen Tiernan had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Cal State L.A., while
Shatori Dearman had 13 points and eight rebounds. Leading scorer
Lacy Ramon was limited to just 15 minutes of playing time before fouling out and finished with six points and six rebounds.
Busi scored six of her team's first eight points and Cal State Stanislaus grabbed a quick 8-2 lead. Busi later added a 3-pointer and a free throw to help the Warriors grab their first double-digit lead of the game at 16-6.
Cal State L.A. went on an 8-0 run fueled by two free throws by Ramon, a 3-pointer by Tiernan, a free throw by
Sonia Miller and a basket by Ramon to make it 16-14 and, after a 3-pointer by Gowan stopped the run, a 3-pointer by Tiernan brought the Golden Eagles back to within two points, 19-17.
That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get, however. The Warriors boosted their lead back up to 10 points and settled for a 47-39 halftime lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the Golden Eagles in the second half. After Lauren Godde hit a jumper to give the Warriors a 49-39 lead, a free throw by Dearman made it 49-40. The Warriors then responded by scoring the next eight points to take a 57-40 lead.
The Warriors led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. got to within 13 points after two free throws by
Alisha Belt with eight minutes to go, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
