CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team had a long-range shooting night for the record books Tuesday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles set a new program record for 3-pointers in a game with 13 and recorded a 75-62 win over the Toros Tuesday night in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (3-0, 1-0 CCAA) hit eight 3-pointers in the first half while taking control of the game.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Toros dating back to the 2006 season. Cal State L.A. hadn't won in Carson since a 56-54 victory on Jan. 7, 2006. The Golden Eagles lost their two games to the Toros last season by a combined total of 45 points.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 14 points in the first half before settling for a 41-33 halftime lead. The Toros trimmed the deficit to seven early in the second half, but the Golden Eagles went on a sustained run and opened up a 22-point lead, 63-41, with 10 minutes remaining and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Erika Ruiz led the Golden Eagles with 20 points, while
Sonia Miller had 13 points and
Gretchen Tiernan added 12 points, six rebounds and a team-high seven assists.
Brittni Hulsizer led four Toros in double figures with 13 points. Ashley Hudson had 12 points, while Sherrie Hughes and Kayla Huckabee had 10 points each.
Cal State L.A. was a sizzling 13-of-22 from behind the 3-point arc. Tiernan made all four of her attempts, while Ruiz and Miller made three each.
Lacy Ramon,
Karmen Gunn and
Lorin Hammer also hit 3-pointers to help set the new mark. The old record for 3-pointers in a game was 11 set against Grand Canyon on Feb. 15, 2003.
In fact, the Golden Eagles shot better from behind the 3-point arc (59 percent) than they did from the free-throw line, where they made only six of 11 (54.5 percent).
Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-3, 0-1 CCAA) shot 44 percent from the floor and was also good from behind the 3-point arc, making nine of 17 attempts (53.9 percent). The Toros were 13-of-21 from the free-throw line and also enjoyed a 31-23 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game on a basket by
Shatori Dearman and a 3-pointer by Tiernan and never trailed. Cal State L.A. went on an 8-0 run courtesy of a 3-pointer by Miller, a basket by Ruiz and a 3-pointer by Ramon to stretch a 30-24 lead to a 38-24 advantage with five minutes left in the half.
The Toros cut it to 41-33 by halftime and scored the opening point of the second half to pull to within seven. A 3-pointer by Ruiz stretched the lead back to 10 and the Golden Eagles never looked back. Cal State L.A. put the game away with an 11-0 run that turned a 44-36 lead into a 55-36 advantage with 15:45 to go.
A 3-pointer by Ruiz gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 63-41, with 9:56 remaining.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday, Dec. 3 with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
