Golden Eagles Sweep CCAA Match From CS Dominguez Hills

Box Score

CARSON – Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team didn't need a stirring comeback on Tuesday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills, it just needed to maintain a big early lead.

The Golden Eagles got off to a solid start and never let up in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 win over the Toros Tuesday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (13-9, 10-8 CCAA) picked up just its third road victory of the season and the Golden Eagles did it quickly.

The match was entirely different than the one the two teams engaged in earlier this season in the Eagles Nest. In that contest, the Golden Eagles trailed 2-0 in sets and had to come back from deficits in each of the final three sets before prevailing.

Zuzana Cizova had 10 kills, three aces and 12 digs to lead Cal State L.A., while Mary Laupepa had 10 kills and four blocks and a hitting percentage of .588. Marquis Mora also had an outstanding hitting percentage of .571 while picking up eight kills.

Elaine Hicks and Elizabeth Krieger had 12 kills each for Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-21, 2-16 CCAA).

Cal State L.A. had a 44-33 advantage in kills and a 6-3 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles also had six service aces to three for the Toros.

Jordyn Moscoso had 25 set assists and a pair of kills for the Golden Eagles, while Stefanie Gay had a match-high 16 digs. Cal State L.A. hit at a sizzling .396 for the match, while holding Cal State Dominguez Hills to just .167.

Cal State L.A. scored the first five points of the match, including two on service aces by Cizova. The Toros battled back to tie it at 6-6, but the Golden Eagles scored the next three points and led the rest of the set. A kill by Natalia Gonzalez stretched the lead to 23-16 and kills by Mora and Cizova finished the set.

The Toros hung close in the second set and trailed by just one at 18-17 before the Golden Eagles scored the next five points on a kill by Chelsea Hamilton, a bad set, an attack error, an ace by Cizova and another attack error. A kill by Hamilton made it 24-18 and the Golden Eagles finally finished the set on a block by Gonzalez and Mora.

The Toros jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the final set, but the Golden Eagles rallied and took the lead for good at 14-13 after a kill by Mora. Two kills by Cizova and one from Laupepa gave the Golden Eagles a 22-15 lead and a kill by Laupepa, a block by Laupepa and Gonzalez and an attack error ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State East Bay.
