Golden Eagles Conclude Regular Season With Victory

Box Score

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put the finishing touches on its regular season with a hard-fought win Saturday night against Humboldt State. Now, the Golden Eagles will wait and see if their strong finish to the 2010 regular season earns them another trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Golden Eagles survived a major scare from the Lumberjacks before prevailing in a five-set California Collegiate Athletic Association match, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10 in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (16-10, 13-9) won for the fifth time in its last six matches.

The Golden Eagles, ranked ninth in the most recent NCAA Division II West Region poll, will now wait for the announcement of the 64-team playoff field on Sunday night. Eight teams from the West Region will qualify for the field. The annoucement will be made on www.ncaa.com.

Cal State L.A. finished fifth in a tightly-packed CCAA. The Golden Eagles are seeking their seventh straight trip to the NCAA playoffs. Cal State L.A. has advanced to at least the regional semi-finals in each of the past five years.

The Golden Eagles needed two wins this week to stay in NCAA playoff contention and they got them with a four-set win at Sonoma State and Saturday's five-set win at Humboldt State (2-24, 2-20 CCAA). Cal State L.A. won the first and third sets, but was extended to a fifth set after the Lumberjacks rallied for wins in the second and fourth sets.

Cal State L.A. opened the fifth set with four straight points -- three of them behind the serving of Chelsea Hamilton -- and never trailed. Humboldt State was able to trim the deficit to one point three times, at 4-3, 7-6 and 10-9, but the Golden Eagles maintained their poise and the lead. Kills by Natalia Gonzalez and Marquis Mora and an ace by Mary Laupepa bumped the lead to 13-9. The Golden Eagles got to match point on a Humboldt State attack error and closed out the match one rally later on a kill by Mora.

Cal State L.A. had a 64-56 edge in kills and hit at a .185 percentage to .174 for the Lumberjacks. The Golden Eagles also had a 7-6 advantage in blocks and a 6-2 lead in service aces.

Mora had 15 kills and two blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Gonzalez had 15 kills and one block. Laupepa had a strong match as well with 12 kills and four blocks. Zuzana Cizova had 10 kills and 17 digs.

Amrita Tuladhar had 41 set assists and 11 digs, while Stefanie Gay had a team-high 25 digs. Hamilton had nine kills and nine digs.
