LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team picked up its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association victory with a solid performance Friday night.
The Golden Eagles had three players reach double figures in kills and swept Humboldt State, 25-14, 25-20, 27-25, Friday in the Eagles Nest in the Billie Jean Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-6, 5-5 CCAA) had a big 50-22 edge in kills.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .291 percentage and limited Humboldt State to a .100 clip. The Lumberjacks had an 8-7 edge in blocks and a 6-5 advantage in service aces.
Cal State L.A. opened with a flourish and raced out to a quick 14-4 advantage in the opening set. A kill by Gonzalez, a service ace by Gonzalez, an attack error and a block by Mora and Tuladhar fueled the run. A block by Mora and Tuladhar eventually got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-13 and a kill by Gonzalez closed out the set.
The Golden Eagles had much tougher battles in the final two sets. Humboldt State got kills by Jolian Arzaadon and Taylor Manuel and a block by Allison Drobish and Ashley Neale to take a quick 3-1 lead. Cal State L.A., though, scored the next four points after kills by Hamilton, Mora and Gonzalez and an ace by Laupepa to take the lead for good. The Lumberjacks cut the deficit to 20-18, but kills by Laupepa, Hamilton, a block by Gonzalez and Laupepa and a kill by Hamilton stretched the lead back to 24-18. A service error and kill by Drobish made it 24-20, but a kill by Laupepa ended the set.
The Golden Eagles seemingly had things in hand in the third set after breaking out to an 18-13 lead. The Golden Eagles, after back-to-back kills by Cizova, took a 23-20 lead, only to see Humboldt State scored the next four points to grab a set point at 24-23. Back-to-back kills by Cizova made it 25-24, but Humboldt State took advantage of a service error to knot things up at 25-25. A kill by Cizova got the Golden Eagles to match point at 26-25 and a kill by Hamilton ended it.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a home match against Sonoma State.
