CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team put an emphatic end to its losing streak.
The Golden Eagles got an overtime goal from
Julian Ringhof and outstanding defense to post a 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Chico State Sunday at University Soccer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (6-3, 5-3) remains just one point out of the CCAA South Division lead.
Ringhof picked up his team-leading third goal of the season to snap two lengthy droughts. The Golden Eagles had not only lost three matches in a row, but they were also blanked in those three contests.
All nine of Cal State L.A.'s games so far this season have ended in shutouts -- six for victories and three defeats.
Thaddeus Caraway made his first start in goal for the Golden Eagles and he made it a good one. He recorded seven saves to earn the shutout. Brennan Brodersen also made a save off the line to thwart a Chico State scoring bid.
Chico State (8-2, 6-2 CCAA) held a 13-7 advantage in shots and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. James Stroud and Sam Evans combined to make two saves in the contest for the Wildcats, who entered the week ranked sixth in the nation. Chico State was blanked for the first time this season.
The winning play started courtesy of a long throw-in by
Joe Davis. His throw sailed almost to the far post, where Ringhof won the ball and popped it up over Evans' outstretched hands.
Cal State L.A.'s defense was stout throughout and limited the Wildcats without a shot in the overtime period.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Cal State East Bay.
