LOS ANGELES -- For the 11th time this season, Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had a game finish in a shutout.
This time, the Golden Eagles were the ones who were unable to score. UC San Diego scored on a direct kick in the 63rd minute and held on for a 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State L.A. Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex.
Cal State L.A. (7-4, 6-4 CCAA) fell out of the CCAA South Division lead with the loss, while UC San Diego (4-4-4, 4-3-3 CCAA) extended its unbeaten streak to six games. Cal State L.A. has won all seven of its games by shutout and lost all four by shutout.
The only goal of the game came on a direct kick from an angle taken by Adam Zernik, who was able to drill a shot that hit the inside of the far post and into the goal.
The Golden Eagles played the final 28 minutes with an extra man after a UC San Diego was sent off after a second yellow card. The Triton defense, though, held firm and goalie Jesse Brennan preserved the lead.
His best save came on a blast by Cal State L.A's
Julian Ringhof with about three minutes left in the game. Brennan was able to get enough of the shot to deflect it off the crossbar. The ball dropped down in play, but Cal State L.A. was unable to get to the rebound.
Thaddeus Caraway had a strong game in goal for the Golden Eagles, making eight saves, including a dazzling stop on a penalty kick in the 55th minute. Kasra Sarabakhsh's attempt was stopped by a diving Caraway, who was able to regroup in time to smother a rebound attempt by Sarabaksh from point-blank range.
UC San Diego then went a man down after the second yellow card, but the Tritons were still able to score the lone goal just one minute following the infraction. Zernik's goal was his first of the season.
The Golden Eagles got a shot by
David Hauser after a corner kick by
Marvin Sandoval, but Brennan was able to make the save.
Both teams ended the game with 13 shots.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Sonoma State.
