No. 23 Golden Eagles Hit The Corner In Overtime Victory

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team turned things up a notch in overtime Sunday and it resulted in a big win over a talented San Francisco State team.

The Golden Eagles, blanked through regulation for the first time this season, got an overtime goal from Ann Marie Tangorra and beat the Gators, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Cox Stadium. Cal State L.A. (7-1, 4-1 CCAA) moved into sole possession of first place in the CCAA South Division with the win.

The Golden Eagles are ranked 23rd in the country.

The game-winning play was set up by Liz Franco, who notched her ninth assist of the season and tied the program single-season record she set last season. Franco took a shot that was cleared out by the Gator defense and resulted in a corner kick. She then took the corner kick and sent in a cross that was collected right in front by Tangorra and kicked into the net from about two yards out at the 92:53 mark.

It was Tangorra's fifth goal of the season.

San Francisco State (3-3-2, 1-2-1 CCAA) got six saves from Rachel Lauderdale, but the Gators fell to 0-2-1 since opening conference play with a big win at UC San Diego.

Cal State L.A. enjoyed an 18-10 edge in shots and most of the advantage came in the second half and overtime. The Golden Eagles had a 6-5 advantage at halftime and a 12-5 edge the rest of the way.

Jessie Walworth made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles and Cal State L.A. posted its seventh shutout of the season. The Golden Eagles have outscored their opponents, 25-2 so far this season.

The Golden Eagles had some chances on corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the game. Kelly Melanson got off a header shot that was saved by Lauderdale in the 12th minute and a shot by Tangorra went wide in the 16th minute.

The Gators had some chances early in the second half, but the Golden Eagles slowly began to generate some solid offense as regulation wound toward a close. Erica Thomas had the best chance in the 86th minute, firing off a shot that hit the post. San Francisco's Andrea Carey had a shot blocked one minute later and Cal State L.A.'s Kastidi Robles had the final shot of regulation get saved by Lauderdale with 2:26 remaining.

The Golden Eagles kept the pressure up in the overtime period and got Tangorra's game-winner less than three minutes in.

Franco and Alex Conley both had five shots each to lead the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
