Golden Eagles Remain Unbeaten With Fifth Shutout Win

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team continued its winning ways with a hard-fought win over No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles posted their fifth consecutive shutout and edged the Broncos, 1-0, in a fast-paced and entertaining California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (5-0, 2-0 CCAA) has recorded five shutouts in a row for the first time ever and started a season 5-0 for the first time as well.

The game was a battle of unbeatens and both teams played well. Cal State L.A. entered the game with a 19-0 margin over its first four opponents, while Cal Poly Pomona (4-1, 0-1 CCAA) had outscored its first four opponents by a 13-1 margin.

Cal State L.A. had a 15-11 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 advantage in the second half.

The only goal of the game was a spectacular one late in the first half. After Cal Poly Pomona had dictated the action for most of the first 40 minutes, the Golden Eagles struck with what turned out to be the game-winner at the 42:53 mark.

After the Golden Eagles controlled the ball in the Cal Poly Pomona end, Liz Franco, the program's career assist leader, sent a beautiful pass to Jasmin Stuemper, who was making a strong run toward the goal. Instead of shooting, Stuemper flicked a pass to Ann Marie Tangorra, who one-timed it into an empty net for the score.

The goal was Tangorra's fourth of the season, which ties her for the team lead. Franco picked up her team-leading sixth assist of the year, while Stuemper picked up her second assist.

The Golden Eagle defense was tested by some strong Cal Poly Pomona runs in the first half, but goalkeeper Jessie Walworth made three of her four saves of the period. The Broncos, in fact, had the first golden scoring chance in the first minute of the game, but Walworth made a diving deflection to rob Cal Poly Pomona's Carolyn Rubendall. Cal Poly Pomona got a corner kick as a result, but could not convert.

After another corner kick in the 15th minute, Cal Poly Pomona had a pair of shots by Mary Carroll sail high, another by Callie Wilson go high and shots by Britany Garrett and Justin Barclay saved by Walworth.

The Golden Eagles got things cranked up late in the half and, two minutes after Tangorra was stopped by Walworth, she didn't miss a wide open net after the great passes from Franco and Stuemper.

With the lead, the Golden Eagles began to control play in the second half, but couldn't add to their lead thanks to some outstanding goalkeeping from Cal Poly Pomona freshman Ashley Salerno. She made 10 saves, including a pair of diving stops in the second half to keep the score at 1-0.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
