CARSON -- One day after winning a one-run California Collegiate Athletic Association contest, Cal State L.A.'s baseball team dropped two nailbiters Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles came up a run short in both ends of a doubleheader, falling to the Toros, 2-1 and 7-6 at Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (19-12, 12-8 CCAA) lost three times in the four-game series. Three of the four contests were one-run affairs.
Nathan Pickett (2-1) continued his outstanding pitching of late and tossed an eight-inning complete game in the opener. He only allowed two runs in the second inning and blanked the Toros on just two hits over the final six innings. He finished the game giving up six hits and two runs over eight inning while walking two and striking out two.
The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to generate any offense against Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Kody Kurowski, who allowed eight hits and one run in a complete-game performance. He walked three and struck out eight.
Cal State L.A. scored its only run in the fourth inning when
Matt Miraldi doubled in
Mario Ramirez. The Golden Eagles stranded six runners on base. Miraldi had three hits, while
Toby Davis had two hits.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles were unable to hold a 6-4 lead. The Toros scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie it and scored the game-winner in the seventh.
Brendan McQuaid had a pair of hits and drove in four runs for the Golden Eagles, while Davis and Ramirez had two hits each. Cal State L.A. had 11 hits, but stranded six and hit into two double plays.
Davis doubled and came around to score on a groundout by McQuaid in the first inning, but the Toros got three back in the bottom of the first due in part to a solo home run by Paul Klingsburg. Cal State L.A. responded with three runs in the second to take a 4-3 lead.
Travis Tartamella hit a solo home run to start the rally and McQuaid had a two-run single to put the Golden Eagles ahead.
The Toros, though, scored twice in the fourth and got a game-winning single from Duarte in the seventh to pick up the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday night with a home non-conference game against Concordia.
