Golden Eagles Struggle Through Offensive Nightmare

CARSON – If Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was hoping to build some momentum after its last-second win over Cal State San Bernardino last Saturday, those hopes went away in a hurry Thursday night.
 
The Golden Eagles suffered through a dismal offensive showing and fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 72-35, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (3-17, 2-11 CCAA), which was coming off a 61-58 win over Cal State San Bernardino, shot just 23.9 percent while losing to the Toros (13-7, 8-5 CCAA).
 
The Golden Eagles made only 11-of-46 shots for the game, while Cal State Dominguez Hills knocked down 27-of-56 (48.2 percent). Cal State L.A. also lost the rebounding battle, 36-34, and had 29 turnovers to only 16 for the Toros.
 
Cal State L.A. made only six baskets in the first half while falling behind, 39-17, by halftime. The Toros kept pouring it on in the second half, limiting the Golden Eagles to only five second-half baskets and 18 total points.
 
The 35 points were the second-lowest total for the Golden Eagles this season. Cal State L.A. managed only 33 in its first meeting this year against the Toros in a 52-33 defeat.
 
Shatori Dearman had eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Amber Whittington had eight points and three rebounds. Sequoia Crandell added six points and five rebounds.
 
Neka Mixon had a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills. MacKenzie Mathias had 12 points and three assists and Kayla Montavalo had 10 points and four assists.
 
Cal State L.A. led only once, 5-4, after a layup by Whittington, but Cal State Dominguez Hills went on an 8-0 run to grab a 12-5 advantage and never looked back. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the final five points of the first half to take a 39-17 halftime lead.
 
It only got worse for the Golden Eagles in the second half. The Toros built leads as large as 38 points in the second half while never leading by less than 22.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home game against UC San Diego.
