Golden Eagles' Final Trip Gets Off To Rough Start

Box Score

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw its final road trip of the season get off to a rough start.

The Golden Eagles were plagued by 31 turnovers and lost to second-place Humboldt State, 92-48, Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (4-22, 3-16 CCAA) trailed, 50-20, at halftime and Humboldt State (20-6, 15-4 CCAA) extended its advantage in the second half.

Cal State L.A. lost both games to Humboldt State this season. Last year, the Golden Eagles swept the Lumberjacks.

Shatori Dearman had an outstanding game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a season-high 20 points and shooting 8-of-12 from the floor. She actually shot better from the floor than she did from the free-throw line, where she missed seven of 11 attempts.

While Dearman shot well from the floor, the rest of the Golden Eagle team struggled. The other Golden Eagles made just 8-of-28.

Cal State L.A. was hurt most, though, by the 31 turnovers. Humboldt State, by comparison, committed only 13. The Lumberjacks also owned a 41-33 rebounding edge and shot 44.6 percent from the floor.

Sequoia Crandell had six points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, Cassie Suffolk had five points and Lacie Jacobsen and Amber Whittington had four points each.

Jennifer Enos had 17 points to lead Humboldt State, while Paige Peterson added 12 points.

The game was close early, although the Golden Eagles never led and were tied only once, at 2-2, after a basket by Jacobsen. Humboldt State steadily increased its lead, but the Golden Eagles were down by just nine points, 21-12, after a basket by Dearman with 11 minutes left in the half.

From there, though, Humboldt State broke the game open. The Lumberjacks scored the final 14 points of the first half as part of a 25-6 run over the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 50-20 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles used a good run early in the second half aided by a technical foul on the Humboldt State bench to slice the deficit to 25 points, 59-34, with 14:42 to go. The Lumberjacks, though, quickly boosted its lead to more than 30 points and led comfortably the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its season on Friday night with a game at Sonoma State.
