SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team bounced back from a disappointing loss to UC San Diego last Saturday with a big road win over San Francisco State Friday night.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 21st in the nation and sixth in the most recent NCAA Division II West Region poll, posted a 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 25-12 win over the Gators Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Main Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. (17-7, 13-4 CCAA) won for the eighth time in its last nine matches and for the 12th time in its last 14 contests.
The Golden Eagles were also able to record a season's sweep over San Francisco State (17-8, 10-7 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. held a 50-38 advantage in kills over the Gators and hit at a .207 percentage to just .027 for San Francisco State. Cal State L.A. also enjoyed an 11-8 edge in blocks.
Marquis Mora had nine kills and five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Zuzana Cizova had nine kills, 10 digs and two blocks and
Gabriela Bulawczyk had nine kills, 14 digs and two blocks.
Chelsea Hamilton had eight kills, while
Mary Laupepa had seven kills and six blocks.
Lauren Walsh had nine kills for the Gators, while Kyle Lamet had eight kills and Beth Perkins added seven kills.
Stefanie Gay had a match-high 22 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Kaylynne De La Rosa had 40 set assists, five kills, four blocks and five digs.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and used a 7-0 run, largely behind strong serving from De La Rosa, to grab a 16-10 lead. San Francisco State pulled to within five points at 21-16, but a kill by Bulawczyk and a ball-handling error made it 23-16 and the Golden Eagles then quickly closed out the set.
Cal State L.A. opened up a 20-11 advantage in the second set after an ace by Bulawczyk and then held off a late San Francisco State rally. The Gators pulled to within 23-19, but kills by Bulawczyk and Cizova gave Cal State L.A. a 2-0 lead.
The third set was the most competitive of the evening and San Francisco State was able to fight off a match point at 24-23 with a kill by Perkins and then win the set on a block by Brittany Powell and Lamet and a service ace by Iris Tolenada.
The Golden Eagles, though, quickly took control of the fourth set and ended the match. San Francisco State led, 5-4, but the Golden Eagles went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-7 lead. Cal State L.A. then got a strong serving run by Gay to extend their lead to 19-9 and, after holding a 22-12 lead, the Golden Eagles closed out the match on a service error, a kill by Mora and an attack error.
Cal State L.A. will play its final road match of the regular season on Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
