POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got things rolling just in the nick of time Saturday night in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first set and were on the verge of falling behind 2-0 before storming back for a 26-28, 26-24, 25-11, 25-23 win over the Broncos in Darlene May Gym. Cal State L.A. (10-6, 6-3 CCAA) won for the fifth time in its last six matches.
Gabriela Bulawczyk led a balanced Cal State L.A. attack with 14 kills, while
Chelsea Hamilton and
Zuzana Cizova had 12 kills each.
Kaylynne De La Rosa had 40 set assists and 15 digs for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. moved into a three-way tie for third place in the conference with the victory.
Cal Poly Pomona (7-9, 4-5 CCAA) was led by Elizabeth Diaz, who had 13 kills. Lindsey Poulos had 12 kills and six blocks and Diana Lake had 10 kills.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 54-50 edge in kills and hit at a .226 percentage to just .149 for the Broncos. The Golden Eagles struggled again serving with three aces and eight service errors. Cal State L.A. had a 9-7 edge in blocks.
The first set was close throughout and the Golden Eagles fought off four set points -- on a block by Hamilton and
Mary Laupepa, a block by Hamilton and
Marquis Mora, a kill by Hamilton and a kill by Cizova -- before the Broncos scored two straight points for a 28-26 edge.
The Golden Eagles were in danger of dropping a close second set as well, but scored the final three points on kills by Bulawczyk, Laupepa and Hamilton to pull it out, 26-24.
The third set was all Cal State L.A. as the Golden Eagles opened up a 17-4 edge and were never threatened. A strong serving run by
Amrita Tuladhar was the highlight of the set. Tuladhar served for 10 straight points to stretch a 7-4 lead to 17-4.
Cal State L.A. opened up what seemed to be a comfortable edge in the fourth set at 23-19 after a kill by Bulawczyk. The Golden Eagles got to match point at 24-22 after a Cal Poly Pomona attack error and, after the Broncos closed to within 24-23, a Cizova kill ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road match at Chico State.
