SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got a late goal and salvaged a 1-1 tie with Cal State San Bernardino Friday in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The Golden Eagles trailed heading into the final minute of regulation, but a goal from
Liz Franco enabled Cal State L.A. to even things up at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (9-2-1, 6-2-1 CCAA), ranked 13th in the nation, still leads the CCAA South Division.
Cal State San Bernardino (5-5-1, 4-2-1 CCAA) remains six points behind the Golden Eagles in the South Division.
Cal State L.A. held a 17-12 advantage in shots, but Cal State San Bernardino goalie Laura Lyons made eight saves to limit the Golden Eagles' offense to just one goal. Cal State L.A. goalie
Jessie Walworth made two saves. Cal State L.A. also had a pair of shots hit the goalpost, but not go in.
The Golden Eagles had a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but only one of those shots was on goal. Cal State L.A. had a 7-6 edge in the second half, but Lyons made six saves in the second half and another on the Golden Eagles' lone shot in overtime.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute when Kristina Gomez scored her fourth goal of the season with an assist from Jordan Cleary.
Cal State San Bernardino held that lead until the final minute when Franco took a pass from Hanna and drilled a shot from about 25 yards out inside the far post for the equalizer. The goal was Franco's sixth of the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a conference match at Cal Poly Pomona.
