LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team kept its winning streak alive with another three-set win.
The Golden Eagles won their sixth straight match and third straight this week in straight sets with a 25-10, 25-17, 25-21 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Humboldt State Saturday afternoon in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-6, 11-3 CCAA) has won 10 of its last 11 matches.
Cal State L.A. beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, No. 17 Sonoma State and Humboldt State, all in straight sets, this week.
Gabriela Bulawczyk led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs and hit at a .545 percentage.
Marquis Mora added 13 kills in 18 attacks with no errors and her .722 hitting percentage puts her in a tie for fifth for the best hitting percentage in a match in the program's history.
Lesley Kalbrener and Caitlin Dugan had five kills each for the Lumberjacks (7-14, 3-10 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. hit at a .348 percentage and held Humboldt State to just .095. The Golden Eagles had a 52-25 edge in kills. Humboldt State had a 7-5 edge in blocks.
Cal State L.A. started quickly and never let up. The Golden Eagles took a 19-9 lead after a kill by Faulkner and, after a kill by Humboldt State's Allison Drobish, the Golden Eagles got kills by Faulkner, Mora,
Keslie Brown, an ace from Brown and a kill by
Zuzana Cizova to put away the first set.
The second set was closer and the Golden Eagles led 11-10 before scoring four straight points on a kill by Bulawczyk, two Humboldt State attack errors and a ball handling error to make it 15-10. Laupepa had a service ace in between three kills by Mora to extend the lead to 20-12 and the Golden Eagles led comfortably until Laupepa's kill ended the set.
The third set went down to the wire and Humboldt State threatened to extend the match. The Lumberjacks took a 20-19 lead after a kill by Kalbrener, but the Golden Eagles scored the next five points to take control of the set. A kill by Bulawczyk started the run and it continued with an attack error, a kill by Laupepa, a block by Cizova and Laupepa, and a block by Faulkner and Laupepa. A bad set made it 24-21, but the Golden Eagles finished the match on a kill by Laupepa.
Cal State L.A. will play its next four matches on the road, beginning with a contest on Wednesday at Cal State East Bay.
