LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team picked up another big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on a record-setting night for junior
Liz Franco.
Behind two goals and one assist from the conference's leading scorer, the Golden Eagles blanked Cal State East Bay, 4-0, Friday night at Jesse Owens Track. No. 17 Cal State L.A. (12-2-2, 9-2-2 CCAA) maintains its two-point edge over UC San Diego in the CCAA South Division.
Franco had five points on Friday and set a new single-season program record for points. She now has a conference-leading 32, which broke the old mark of 29 set by Kristy Contreras. Franco already holds the single-season assist record as well, picking up her 14
th of the season on a goal by
Kastidi Robles just 11:21 into the game. Her 55 career points already has her in a tie with
Khadijah Greenwood for second on the Cal State L.A. all-time list.
Cal State L.A. scored a pair of goals in each half and had a 23-8 advantage in shots over Cal State East Bay (3-9-3, 2-7-2 CCAA). The Golden Eagles stretched their unbeaten string to seven and are 5-0-2 over that stretch.
Heather Emswiler, making her first start in goal, made three saves to post the shutout.
Franco opened the scoring in the 11
th minute. She got a beautiful pass from
Ann Marie Tangorra and knocked a point-blank shot into the right corner of the net for her eighth goal of the season.
She then assisted on a goal by Robles less than a minute later. Franco made a pass to Robles, who knocked a shot just under the crossbar for his second goal in as many games. She had the dramatic game-winner in double overtime Sunday at Sonoma State.
Franco then notched her second goal of the game and ninth of the season when she re-directed a long free kick by Robles into the goal. Franco's ninth goal of the season tied her for the team lead with Tangorra.
Jasmin Stuemper closed out the scoring with her fourth goal of the season.
Gabbi Segall started the play with a nice pass to
Stacey Rodwell, who sent a perfect pass across the box to an onrushing Stuemper, who tapped it into the right corner of the goal from the left side of the box in the 78
th minute.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Monday night against UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles will honor their five seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
