ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had a start Sunday it would probably love to forget, but a finish well worth remembering.
The Golden Eagles spotted Sonoma State a goal in the first minute of the game, but fought back and eventually pulled out a 2-1 win on a
Kastidi Robles goal late in the second overtime period in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Rohnert Park. Cal State L.A. (11-2-2, 8-2-2 CCAA) maintained its lead in the CCAA South Division and stretched its unbeaten string to six matches.
Cal State L.A. is 4-0-2 in its last six matches and has shown an ability to come from behind. The Golden Eagles, after beating Chico State, 2-1, started the come-from-behind string with a 2-1 double-overtime win over Cal State Stanislaus after trailiing, 1-0, a tie with Cal State San Bernardino that included a game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation, a 3-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona that included a comeback from a 2-0 halftime deficit and a 3-3 tie at Humboldt State after falling behind, 3-0, in the second half.
The Golden Eagles added another chapter on Sunday. Cal State L.A. fell behind just 51 seconds into the game when Sonoma State's Tracy Webster took advantage of a misplay and scored her fifth game of the season.
That score held up through halftime, but the Golden Eagles tied it in the 52nd minute.
Ann Marie Tangorra, who scored twice to lift Cal State L.A. into the tie on Friday, notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season. She was able to got to a loose ball on the right side of the goal and hit a shot into the left corner of the net.
Neither team scored again until Robles ended the game with her dramatic goal.
Liz Franco, the Golden Eagles' all-time leader in assist, had the assist on the goal that came with just 1:32 remaining in the second overtime period. Franco sent a pass to Robles, who raced toward the goal, on the right-center of the field. After turning the corner on a Sonoma State defender, she knocked a shot into the left side of the goal for the win.
The goal was the first of the season for Robles.
Cal State L.A. had a 19-13 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. After a 5-5 tie in shots in the first half, the Golden Eagles dicated the action the rest of the way, holding a 14-8 edge in the second half and overtime periods. The margin was 8-3 in the two overtime periods. Sonoma State goalie Alexis Sciacqua made six saves, while Cal State L.A. goalie
Jessie Walworth made four saves.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
