Golden Eagles Set To Open CCAA Tournament Play

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team will be making its fifth straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament appearance on Thursday and hoping for some more program history in an already historic season in the process.

The Golden Eagles (21-6, 18-4 CCAA) earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament and will face No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay (14-13, 11-11) in a first-round contest on Thursday at noon in Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.

The winner advances to face No. 2 seed Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday at noon.

Cal State LA has reached the conference semi-finals in three of the past four seasons and is seeking its first appearance in a title game since 2013. The Golden Eagles have never won a conference title.

Cal State LA is making its 16th CCAA Tournament appearance and has a 10-15 record in its first 15 trips.

The Golden Eagles are enjoying a record-setting season that has already seen them set new program standards for consecutive wins (15) and conference wins (18) and tie the record for wins in a season (21). Nevaeh Asiasi became the program's first-ever CCAA Player of the Year earlier this week.

The Golden Eagles will be facing the Otters for the third time this season after winning both regular-season matchups. Cal State LA prevailed, 82-64, in Seaside on Jan. 17 and again in Los Angeles, 76-64, on Feb. 12.

Cal State LA and Cal State Monterey Bay have met only once in CCAA Tournament history, with the Otters getting an offensive rebound and basket at the buzzer to win the 2012 tournament championship.

Cal State LA's only other trip to the CCAA Tournament championship game came the very next year with the Golden Eagles falling to UC San Diego, 71-69.

The Golden Eagles placed five players on the All-CCAA team released on Tuesday with CCAA Player of the Year Nevaeh Asiasi and Sofia Fidelus both earning first-team honors, Amaya Fuentes and Ariyah Smith earning second-team honors and Mariah Blake receiving honorable mention.
