Golden Eagles Set The Stage For A Title Game

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team picked up its program-record 15th straight win on Thursday to set the stage for a monumental California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles overcame a stern challenge from Cal State San Bernardino, eventually pulling away for a 79-62 victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (21-5, 18-3 CCAA) matched the program record for wins in a season and extended its record for conference victories.

The Golden Eagles will now face Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday with championship stakes. Cal Poly Pomona clinched at least a share of the CCAA regular-season title with a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday. The Golden Eagles are one game back and can earn a share of a first-ever conference title with a win over the Broncos.

Cal State LA has never finished higher than third in the conference. 

Nevaeh Asiasi had a game-high 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists in another outstanding performance. She has now scored 20 or more points in 14 games this season. She led four Golden Eagles in double figures. Ronyae Jackson had 15 points and five rebounds, while Ariyah Smith had 10 points, six rebounds and nine assists and Mary Cotton had 10 points and six rebounds.

Princess Cassell led the Coyotes (12-14, 9-11 CCAA) with 18 points, while Jaushlynn Ruffin had 13 points and six rebounds and Rebecca Saidoff had 12 points and six assists. Cal State San Bernardino is in a three-way tie for sixth heading into its final game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

Kyara Walter had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while Amaya Fuentes had five points and four rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 40.5 percent for the game (30-of-74) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-20 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 37 percent (20-of-54) and was 9-of-20 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 13-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 42-38 rebounding edge and committed only six turnovers to 18 for the Coyotes.

Cal State LA found itself tied at 26-26 after one period and held just a 43-40 lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles, though, finally got some breathing room in the third quarter, using a 15-3 run to open up a 65-47 lead in the final minute of the third quarter before the Coyotes scored the final four points of the period to make it 65-51.

The Golden Eagles led by double digits the rest of the way, grabbing their biggest lead at 79-58, with 2:26 to go.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with the showdown with Cal Poly Pomona on Senior Day.
