Golden Eagles Take Their Shot, But See Streak End

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team's shot at history was an exciting one, but one that ultimately fell short Saturday in University Gym.

Bidding for a first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship, the Golden Eagles sliced a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to just two points, but Cal Poly Pomona held on for a 74-70 win and the outright conference championship. Cal State LA (21-6, 18-4 CCAA) had its program-record 15-game winning streak snapped and fell into a second-place tie with Cal Poly Humboldt, recording the highest finish in a conference season in program history.

Cal State LA, though, got the No. 3 seed for next week's conference tournament and will face No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay in a first-round game on Thursday at noon at Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.

Nevaeh Asiasi had another spectacular game for the Golden Eagles after being one of four seniors honored before the contest. She had a game-high 26 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, marking the 15th time this season she has scored 20 or more points. A returning Sofia Fidelus was a bright spot as well, scoring 17 points to go along with six assists. Ariyah Smith had 12 points.

Mydrea Moore had 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead four players in double figures for the Broncos (25-3, 20-2 CCAA). Hunter Hudson had 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Sydney Nelson and Andrea Stajic had 13 points each.

Mariah Blake had six points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, Gabriella Rones had five points and three assists.

Cal State LA shot just 35.4 percent for the game (29-of-82) and was just 7-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also just 5-of-10 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) and just 2-of-11 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line.

After a slow start to the game, the Broncos led by as many as eight points in the first period before taking a 20-13 lead. Cal State LA trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter before closing to within 36-30 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as eight points in the third period, but tied the game at 42-42 after back-to-back layups from Asiasi and Fidelus and took the lead at 43-42 after a free throw by Kyara Walter with 3:26 left in the period. The teams traded baskets after that with Cal State LA taking a 48-46 lead after a three-point play by Asiasi and a 51-50 lead after a 3-pointer by Fidelus.

The Golden Eagles took a 53-52 lead after an offensive rebound and basket by Blake, but the Broncos matched their biggest lead of the game, 68-59, with 3:21 to go. Cal State LA scored the next five points on a 3-pointer by Asiasi and a basket by Rones to cut the margin to four points and got to within three points after a layup by Asiasi with 26 seconds to go. After one free throw by Nelson, Asiasi scored on another layup to make it 72-70 with 16 seconds left. The Broncos again made one free throw, giving the Golden Eagles a shot to tie, but a 3-pointer just missed and the Broncos put the game away with a late free throws.

Cal State LA honored their four seniors - Nevaeh Asiasi, Mary Blake, Amaya Fuentes and Gabriella Rones - in pregame ceremonies.

The Golden Eagles will make their fifth straight trip to the CCAA Tournament next week
