Golden Eagles Storm Their Way Into CCAA Semis

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team continued its historic season with a tremendous opening-round game at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles scored the first 13 points of the game and overwhelmed No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay, 74-40, on Thursday in a CCAA Tournament quarterfinal contest in Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (22-8) set a new program record for wins in a season and advanced to a semifinal matchup with No. 2 seed Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday at noon.

CCAA Player of the Year Nevaeh Asiasi had another sensational game, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds. She also had five assists and one steal for good measure. She reached 20 points for the 16th time this season and recorded her 10th double-double.

Ariyah Smith had 11 points, two assists and four steals, while Mariah Blake had nine points.

Janelle Pena had 11 points for Cal State Monterey Bay (14-14).

Kyara Walter had seven points and two steals for the Golden Eagles, while Amaya Fuentes and Sofia Fidelus had six points each.

Cal State LA shot 41.8 percent for the game (28-of-67) and was 6-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot just 26.8 percent (15-of-56) for the game and was just 3-of-22 from 3-point range. Cal State LA had a 44-41 rebounding edge and committed 10 turnovers to 21 for the Otters.

The Golden Eagles took charge early, scoring the first 13 points of the game and jumping out to a 24-12 lead after one period. The Golden Eagles led 42-26 at halftime and then limited Cal State Monterey Bay to just four points in the third quarter and 14 points total in the second half.

Cal State LA will be meeting Cal Poly Humboldt for the third time this season. The Golden Eagles lost to the 'Jacks, 74-73, in Arcata on Jan. 4 and then posted a 74-47 win over the 'Jacks on Jan. 29 in University Gym.
