Golden Eagles Race Their Way Into CCAA Tourney Final

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team picked up a second straight decisive victory in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Friday and earned its way into the championship game for the first time since 2013.

The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles raced out to a 40-24 lead by halftime and had a 47-31 advantage in the second half to beat No. 2 seed Cal Poly Humboldt, 87-55, in a semifinal game in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (23-6) extended its program-record for wins in a season and earned a spot in the finals against No. 1 seed and tournament host Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State LA will be making its third appearance in the tournament championship game since the tournament was reborn in 2008 and its first since falling to UC San Diego, 66-61, in the Ontario Arena, in 2013. The Golden Eagles reached the tournament final in 2012 and fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 71-69, on a putback at the buzzer at UC San Diego. Cal State LA also reached tournament finals in 1988 and 1991 when the tournament had four participants. The tournament was scrapped in 1998 and returned in 2008 with an eight-team field. The six-team format has been in place since 2022.

Cal State LA will be aiming for its first conference crown on Saturday riding the momentum from two emphatic victories in the past two days. After eliminating No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay, 74-40, on Thursday, the Golden Eagles took care of No. 2 Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday by an 87-55 count. Cal State LA has outscored its opponents in the tournament, 161-95.

Nevaeh Asiasi led the way once again with a game-high 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a steal, but she had plenty of help in this one. Ariyah Smith had 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Kyara Walter had 13 points, three rebounds and five steals.

Jordyn Smith had 15 points and 13 rebounds for Cal Poly Humboldt (20-9), while Shade Satica had 15 points.

Mariah Blake had nine points and seven rebounds and Ronyae Jackson also had nine points. In all, Cal State LA had nine players score five points or more and had a 34-10 advantage in bench scoring.

Cal State LA also had a 33-13 advantage in points off turnovers.

Cal State LA shot 49.3 percent (33-of-67) and was 9-of-24 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) and was 5-of-21 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were 8-of-13 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 44-31 rebounding edge and also forced 25 turnovers while committing 21.

Unlike Thursday, when Cal State LA scored the first 13 points of the game, Cal Poly Humboldt was the first to score on Friday and held a one-point lead before Blake hit a jumper in the paint to give the Golden Eagles a 16-15 lead after one period.

The Golden Eagles then got some separation with a 24-9 advantage in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles opened the period with a 10-0 run that included a steal and layup by Walter, an offensive rebound and basket by Smith and back-to-back 3-pointers from Walter and Gabriella Rones that gave them a 26-15 lead. The 'Jacks got a 3-pointer from Leamsi Acuna to trim a 14-point deficit to 11, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a 3-pointer by Smith and a layup by Smith to take a 40-24 halftime lead.

Back-to-back layups from Jackson and Sofia Fidelus to open the third quarter built the lead to 44-24 and the Golden Eagles led by at least 17 points the rest of the way. A layup by Walter gave the Golden Eagles a 64-40 lead after three quarters and the Golden Eagles extended their advantage to 32 points in the final period.

The title game is set for a 5 p.m. tip-off on Saturday in Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.
