POMONA -- For the first time in program history, Cal State LA's women's basketball team can celebrate a championship.
The Golden Eagles completed a dominating performance in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with a 78-62 victory over No. 1 seed and tournament host Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (24-6) won its first-ever tournament title in emphatic fashion, winning its three tournament games by a total of 82 points in the most impressive series of games in program history.
With the win, Cal State LA earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs and will make its third appearance in the past four seasons. The Golden Eagles, the No. 5 seed in the region entering conference tournament play, will find out the pairings and location of the tournament on Sunday night.
The Golden Eagles also extended their program record for wins in a season to 24.
Sofia Fidelus led the way with a tremendous performance, scoring a team-high 27 points on 8-of-14 shooting that included a 4-for-4 effort from 3-point range. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by the fantastic
Nevaeh Asiasi, who added CCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player honors to her CCAA Player of the Year award. Both are firsts for the Cal State LA program. Asiasi had 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Sydney Nelson led Cal Poly Pomona (26-4) with 27 points, while Andrea Stajic added 16 points.
Ariyah Smith reached double figures in scoring for the third time in three games for the Golden Eagles with 12 points and four assists, while
Mariah Blake 11 points and 12 rebounds in 26 electric minutes.
Mary Cotton had seven points and four rebounds and
Amaya Fuentes hit a big 3-pointer and grabbed five rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 37.7 percent for the game (26-of-62) and was 9-of-17 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 17-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 41.9 percent for the game (23-of-61) and was 4-of-10 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 12-of-21 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA was narrowly out-rebounded, 42-38 and forced 17 turnovers while committing only 11.
The Golden Eagles had a 20-8 advantage in points off of turnovers and the bench was strong once again and had a 21-6 edge.
Cal State LA trailed early, 8-4, but went on a 7-0 run after baskets by Asiasi and Fidelus and a 3-pointer by Fuentes to take the lead and then got a basket from Blake to take a 13-12 lead after the first period.
The Golden Eagles got 3-pointers from Smith and Fidelus early in the second period to take a 19-14 lead and they never relinquished the lead. The Broncos closed to within three points, but a pair of free throws by Fidelus and a 3-pointer by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles a 33-25 halftime lead.
Asiasi scored seven straight points early in the third quarter to give the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 40-29 and they never led by less than eight points the rest of the period. A layup by Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 59-41 lead entering the fourth quarter.
A free throw by Blake gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 60-41 advantage with 9:20 remaining and they held safe double-digit margins the rest of the way.
