Golden Eagles Compete Well At Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS -- Cal State LA's women's track and field team got two impressive victories to highlight the day at the Harvard Crimson Open on Friday.

Kailea Satterwhite set a new personal record and won the women's open weight throw with a mark of 52-7.25, while Sinaiah Pointer picked up an exciting victory in the open shot put at the Gordon Indoor Track. Satterwhite got her winning throw on her sixth and final attempt and vaulted from fourth to first. After fouling on her first two throws, she moved into the top-nine with a mark of 48-6.25 to earn three additional attempts. After a foul on her fourth throw, Satterwhite moved up with a mark of 49-11.75 and then took full advantage of her final attempt.

Her mark is No. 4 all-time at Cal State LA.

"I was excited to travel to Boston this week to compete at Harvard. My early throws didn't go as planned," Satterwhite said. "Gratefully, I made it into finals. I knew I was capable of more, I just had to prove it. I adjusted my mindset, trusted in myself, and delivered a big throw of 16.03 when it mattered most. I'm so grateful to have my team supporting me throughout the way!"

Pointer, meanwhile, also set a new personal record while winning the shot put. She got her winning mark on her fourth throw, moving into the lead by less than two inches, and then holding on for the win.

Her mark is No. 7 all-time at Cal State LA and was more than a foot further than her previous best.

"Today was a really good day to take first," Pointer said. "I'm grateful for my progress, moving up and up as I get ready for my outdoor season next week. Thanks to Coach Sarigiannis and my teammate Kailea for keeping me focused and reminding me to keep my upper body back. It's the small things. I also want to shout out my family texting me with encouraging words before I throw!"

Emmerson Wiggins was 14th in the 200 with a time of 25.79 and 14th in the 400 with a time of 59.55 for the Golden Eagles, while Dalia Romo had the team's fastest time in the 400 with a mark of 59.30 that earned her 12th place in the event and was a season's best. Keiasja Carbins was 21st in the 60 with a season's best time of 7.91. Mikaela Holguin had her best time of the season with a mark of 2:35.50 in the 800. Cal State LA's Wiggins, Romo, Georgia Gaylor and Jewel Perry finished second in the 4x400 yard relay with a time of 4:01.71.

"This is my first experience running indoor track, and I'm learning every day while feeling myself get faster and stronger," Carbins said. "I'm excited to keep progressing and see how much I can grow. It's an honor to have this opportunity as a freshman, and I'm honored to represent Cal State LA."

Said head coach Tina Fernandes: "The Crimson Meet serves as a new venue for our group.  Kailea Satterwhite opened up the event for us with an impressive personal record.  Her talent continues to shine, and her focus and determination grow with each competition. Sinaiah Pointer demonstrated her commitment to improvement. I was thrilled for our throwers and Coach Sarigiannis to witness their progress on meet day. Our objective is to maintain a positive attitude while focusing on improvement and learning from each meet. We aspire to continue our progress in tomorrow's meet at Boston University."

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
