AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team ran into a powerhouse opponent in its season opener on Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles faced off against No. 15 Azusa Pacific and fell to the Cougars, 7-0, at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex. The Cougars (5-0) took the doubles point and all six singles contests.

Maldini Simic had the match of the day for the Golden Eagles, battling with Vini Bautista in a contest that went down to the wire before Bautista rallied for a 0-6, 7-5 (11-9) victory at No. 2 singles.

Sofia Pavlova fell to Stina Larsson at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, Georgiana Parr fell to Karola Suviste at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1, Mane Sargsyan fell to Shannele Lopez at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1, Ainoho Salo fell to Kimberly Tran at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and Charlotte Downs fell to Melis Mert, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

In doubles, Parr and Sargysan had a tight match at No. 2 doubles before falling to Lopez and Mert, 6-4. Simic and Pavlova fell at No. 1 doubles to Suviste and Larsson, 6-1, and Salo and Downs fell at No. 3 doubles to Bautista and Tia Kaukenas, 6-1.

Cal State LA will play its home opener next Wednesday, Feb. 18, against Biola at 2 p.m.
