AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Cal State LA's women's golf team put itself in a strong position to reach nationals for the first time in program history, but the Golden Eagles struggled to the finish line.
The Golden Eagles led after the opening round and had another day to sit on the lead when the second round was postponed due to weather on Tuesday. That meant the remaining 36 holes had to be played on Wednesday.
Cal State LA was still in good position and was third, just two shots out of the lead heading into the final round before slipping into a tie for sixth and finishing just outside the top-five necessary to qualify for nationals.
The Golden Eagles shot rounds of 291 and 298 on Wednesday when scoring conditions were much better than they were on Monday when Cal State LA's 305 led the talented field.
Midwestern State and Dallas Baptist tied at the end of the third round with Midwestern State winning the team title on the first extra hole. West Texas A&M's Anna Nomrowski edged Midwestern State's Brecklyn Flanagan on the first playoff hole to win the individual title.
Cal State LA's
Morgan Sjoerdsma was in the mix for the regional title and held the lead until the midway point of the final round before a rough finish dropped her out of the lead. She played some spectacular golf on Wednesday, shooting a 3-under-par 68, which was the best score of the second round and added two more birdies before the eighth hole of her final round to open up a lead.
She fell out of the lead with a 10-over-par score over a seven-hole stretch before closing with two birdies over the next three holes to finish her round like a champion. Sjoerdsma finished in a tie for 10th, four shots out of the lead, with a score of 220 after rounds of 74-68-78.
Daniela Andrade had a strong day on Wednesday and climbed into a tie for 10th with four other golfers including Sjoerdsma. She had rounds of 70 and 72 on Wednesday with six birdies on the day. After five bogeys over a six-hole stretch early in the final round, Andrade had four birdies over a six-hole stretch to climb the leaderboard.
Joshlyn Ayala, coming off a third-place finish at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, finished in a tie for 22nd after rounds of 75 and 73 on Wednesday. She had an eagle in her second straight tournament, recording a 3 on the par-5 eighth hole in the final round. She also had four birdies over the final two rounds.
Harley Richardson finished in a tie for 67th with rounds of 78 and 77. She had three birdies over the final two rounds and five for the tournament.
Sarah Amaya finished in a tie for 73rd after rounds of 78 and 76 on Wednesday. She had three birdies over the final two rounds.
Cal State LA, which was ranked 27th in the nation and seventh in the West Region entering the regionals, finished its most successful season with its first solo tournament win, a second-place finish in the CCAA Championships and seven top-five finishes in 11 tournaments.
