CARMEL -- Cal State LA's women's golf team showed some resiliency after a tough opening round of the Patriot Invitational.
The Golden Eagles were ninth after the first of two rounds on Monday, but climbed into a tie for sixth after 54 holes at the Quail Golf Club. No. 37 Cal State LA trails five teams that are all ranked higher nationally than the Golden Eagles in the latest national poll. The Golden Eagles, after shooting a round of 310 in the opening round, improved to a 303 score in the second and have a total of 613.
No. 2 Dallas Baptist, the tournament host, leads with a score of 587, while No. 5 UT Tyler is second at 592; No. 16 Tampa is third at 596, No. 14 Cal State San Marcos is fourth at 601 and No. 3 Anderson of South Carolina is fifth at 610. Cal State LA jumped from ninth to sixth after improving its first-round score by seven shots in the second round, where scoring for many teams was higher.
Daniela Andrade is in a tie for 12th after consecutive rounds of 76. She had one birdie and five bogeys in each round.
Lisette Orellana had the best bounce back of the day for Cal State LA and is in a tie for 30that 155. After not figuring in the team's scoring in the first round after shooting an 82, she fired a 2-over-par 73 that was the team's best score in the second round. After starting the second round with a double-bogey, Orellana rebounded to shoot even par - with two birdies and two bogeys - over the final 17 holes.
Joshlyn Ayala was next for the Golden Eagles and is in a tie for 35th after rounds of 79 and 77 for a total of 156. She had three birdies in the first round and one in the second.
Talia Gutman is tied for 41st after rounds of 79 and 78 for a total of 157 and
Rilee Crosby is tied for 49th after rounds of 77 and 83 for a total of 160. She had a team-high five birdies in the two rounds.
Cal State LA will conclude the tournament with another 18 holes on Tuesday.
