Golden Eagles Return To CCAA Tournament At Home

CCAA TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team will be making an appearance in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament for the first time since 2018 and the Golden Eagles will do it at home.

The No. 4 Golden Eagles will face No. 5 Chico State in the second of two first-round games on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Reeder Field. The first game of the day will match No. 3 seed San Francisco State against No. 6 seed Cal State San Marcos at noon.

The two winners on Wednesday will advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament beginning on Thursday. The tourney will continue on Friday and conclude with a champion being crowned on Saturday.

Regular-season champion Cal State Monterey Bay is the No. 1 seed and Cal State Dominguez Hills is the No. 2 seed. Both teams earned first-round byes and will play their first games on Thursday.

Cal State LA reached the conference tournament with a series win at Cal State Dominguez Hills last weekend that pulled them into fourth place, the Golden Eagles' best finish since a second-place finish in 2013. The Golden Eagles won the conference tournament for the first time that season with an overpowering performance at Stockton's Banner Island Ballpark. Cal State LA outscored its opponents, 49-12, in five games to win the title.

The conference tournament is making a return to Reeder Field for the first time since 2007. The Golden Eagles were a No. 2 seed in a four-team double-elimination tournament, but fell to Chico State, 3-2, in 10 innings and to UC San Diego, 7-2.

Cal State LA rebounded and won the NCAA West Regional that year, also at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles hosted the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2006 and, as a No. 3 seed, fell to UC San Diego, 8-4 and top-seed Cal State Dominguez Hills, 9-0.

Cal State Monterey Bay is the two-time defending tournament champion after outlasting San Francisco State, 12-9, in the title game at Scolinos Field in Pomona. The Otters staged a five-run rallyin the ninth inning to win the title after San Francisco State had won earlier in the day, 5-4, to set up the winner-take-all championship game.

Four teams - Cal State Monterey Bay, San Francisco State, Chico State and Cal State San Marcos - return from last year's field. Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills are the two newcomers.

Cal State LA will be meeting Chico State for the third time in a CCAA Tournament game.

The Wildcats prevailed, 8-7, in a first-round game in 2017 in Stockton, while Cal State LA took a 9-0 decision in the opening round in 2013, also in Stockton, when the Golden Eagles went on to take their only tournament title.

Chico State took the first meeting, 3-2, in 10 innings in a first-round game at Reeder Field in 2007.

Cal State LA is making its seventh trip to the CCAA Tournament since its exception in 1999. Cal State LA is 7-11 in its previous six appearances.

Chico State has won five conference tournament titles, while Cal State Monterey Bay has won two. Cal State LA, San Francisco State, Cal State San Marcos and Cal State Dominguez Hills are all seeking a first conference tournament championship.
