NEW ORLEANS -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams were among those programs honored when the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) announced All-America and All-Region teams this month.
Jonon Young led the way with her two All-American awards she earned at last week's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Young finished sixth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump and now has seven All-America awards in her two years at Cal State LA. She has earned four in outdoor track and field and three in indoor track and field, including the 2024 NCAA championship in the indoor triple jump.
Student-athletes earned first-team All-America recognition by finishing in the top eight of their individual events and second-team honors for finishing ninth-thru-12th. Ninth and 10th-place relay teams also received second-team honors. Young has six first-team All-America awards and one second-team honor.
Cal State LA also fared well when regional honors were announced earlier. The top-five in each individual event and the top-three ranked relay teams earned regional honors from the USTFCCCA.
Young earned two more All-Region awards in the long jump and triple jumps, bringing her two-year total to seven.
Leon Tafirenyika and
Drew Hill led the way for the men's team with a pair of All-Region awards in the 100 and 4x100 relay. Tafirenyika completed his Cal State LA career with 15 All-Region awards, including one he picked up in indoor track and field in the 60 meters earlier this year.
Hill also picked up All-Region awards in the 100 and 4x100 in outdoor track and another in the 60 meters in indoor track, giving him three in his first year with the Cal State LA program.
Tafirenyika and Hill were joined by
Jahbari Fraser and
Dominic Boykins on the 4x100 relay team that also earned All-Region honors. Boykins earned All-Region honors for the second time in his career - both in the 4x100 relay - while Fraser earned his first All-Region award.
