TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams added to their championship and all-conference totals on the final day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Championships.
The Golden Eagles got two more individual titles on Saturday with
Drew Hill capturing the 100 meters to keep Cal State LA's title streak in that event in tact, while
Matthew Bender won the javelin title by nearly 11 feet. He took command early in the event and led from start to finish.
Hill won the 100 with a time of 10.33 and came back to earn All-Conference honors in a second event after finishing third in 21.31. Hill also earned a pair of fourth-place finishes in relays. He was joined by
Jahbari Fraser,
Dominic Boykins and
Martin Zarzuela in the 4x100 and by
Gabriel Pearson,
Taiten McKiver and
Nicholas Aninze in the 4x400.
Bender won the javelin with a season's best mark of 199-2. He also had a throw of more than 198 feet while taking the lead early in the event.
Cal State LA also got points from
Nicholas Aninze and
Gabriel Pearson in the 400 hurdles. Aninze was seventh in 54.42 and Pearson was eighth in 55.54.
Cal State LA also got a pair of All-Conference performances from the women's team.
Dalia Romo was third in the 400 hurdles in 61.97, while
Paula Romo was sixth in 65.17.
Vanessa Portillo was third in the javelin with a mark of 124-8 to earn her first All-CCAA honor.
The 4x400 relay team of
Emmerson Wiggins,
Destiny Moedano,
Dalia Romo and
Paula Romo was fourth in 3:52.43 and earned the points that enabled the Golden Eagles to jump up from seventh to fifth in the team standings.
The men, competing without the ailing
Leon Tafirenyika, who had won 11 conference titles over the past three seasons, finished seventh with 41 points, one point out of sixth and 3.5 points behind Cal Poly Humboldt.
Cal State LA claimed a pair of major awards.
Drew Hill was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Meet and
Jonon Young was named the CCAA Field Athlete of the Meet. Young won the award for a second straight year.
