CARSON -- Cal State LA's baseball clinched a spot in the six-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with a big doubleheader sweep Friday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles prevailed in a wild opener, 10-9, and then got a seven-inning complete game from
AJ Moreno to take the nightcap, 7-1. Cal State LA, which will host the CCAA Tournament beginning next Wednesday, has reached the tournament for the first time since 2018.
Cal State LA (26-23, 23-16 CCAA) moves into sole possession of fourth place and is also now just one game back of Cal State Dominguez Hills (28-20, 24-15 CCAA).
Isaiah Marquez broke a 9-9 tie with a solo home run to centerfield in the top of the ninth inning of the opener and
Ismael Quintero got the final three outs for his fifth save of the season.
It was a crazy game that featured 10 home runs, including two from Marquez.
Brayan Nunez and
Javy Espinoza also homered for the Golden Eagles. Cal State Dominguez Hills hit six home runs in the game, which accounted for seven of the Toros' nine runs in the game.
Lino Zepeda kept the Golden Eagles in the game with 5 1/3 innings before tiring a bit in the sixth.
Moises Escobedo came on and pitched 2 2/3 innings of outstanding relief to get the win. After surrendering a game-tying solo home run to Quinn Johnson in the sixth, Escobedo blanked the Toros over the next two innings before turning things over to Quintero.
Marquez was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI,
Malik Clayton was 3-for-4 with one RBI and
Ethan Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Cal State LA had 14 hits in the game and drew 10 walks.
After Cal State Dominguez Hills jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Cal State LA scored four consecutive runs on bases-loaded walks to
Ben Lee,
Alberto Prado, Clayton and
Cesar Chavez to take the lead.
Solo home runs by Dalton Cram in the second and Noah Karliner in the third put the Toros ahead, 5-4, before the Golden Eagles retook the lead with a solo home run by Nunez and a two-run homer from Marquez in the fifth.
Cal State LA extended the lead to 9-5 on a two-run home run from Espinoza in the top of the sixth, but the Toros hit three home runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it.
The game remained tied at 9-9 until Marquez hit his second home run of the game with one out in the top of the ninth.
Quintero issued a pair of two-out walks in the ninth before ending the game with a strikeout.
Moreno was the story of the nightcap, allowing seven hits and one run over seven innings. He carried a shutout and a 6-0 lead into the seventh.
Espinoza hit his second home run of the day, a two-run shot, to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the second. A run-scoring single by Marquez in the fifth increased the lead to 3-0.
Cal State LA expanded its lead to 6-0 in the seventh on a run-scoring double by
Kadyn Victorian and a two-run single by Marquez. Â
Emilio Barrera got the Toros on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out home run, but Moreno got the final two outs without incident for his first complete game of the season.
Cal State LA will conclude the series and the regular season on Saturday with a single game at Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at noon.
