Golden Eagles Drop Conference Finale To Toros

CARSON -- Cal State LA's baseball team, which clinched its spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Friday, concluded its regular season Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles dropped the finale, 5-3, at Toro Field and finished the series with three wins in the four games. Cal State LA (26-24, 23-17 CCAA) finished the conference season in fourth place and is one of six teams to qualify for the CCAA Tournament, which will be held next week at Reeder Field.

Cal State LA is in the conference tournament for the first time since 2018.

Tournament seedings and matchups were announced by the conference later Saturday evening and No. 4 seed Cal State LA will face No. 5 seed Chico State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the second of two single elimination games. The tournament will kick off with No. 3 San Francisco State facing No. 6 Cal State San Marcos at noon. The winners will advance to face No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay or No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.

Isaiah Marquez hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season in the third inning for the Golden Eagles, while Javy Espinoza and Ethan Gonzalez drove in runs with groundouts.

Quinn Johnson and Noah Karliner hit home runs for the Toros (29-20, 25-15 CCAA), who climbed up into a tie for second place with the victory.

Evan Vasquez allowed five hits and three runs over seven innings to get the win for Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Teige Barrett pitched two scoreless innings to get the save.

Brandon Gutierrez pitched the first inning, allowed one run, and took the hard-luck loss. Jonathan Manuel allowed two runs in the second inning and Joel Martinez pitched well, allowing two runs over four innings. Atticus Gonzalez and Anthony Diaz pitched scoreless innings to finish up.
