Golden Eagles Unable To Slow Down Coyotes

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a rough ending to its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles held a 4-3 lead after four innings, but the Coyotes exploded for 18 runs over the next three innings and took the finale, 22-7. Cal State LA (23-23, 20-16 CCAA) won the opener on Friday and then dropped the last three games of the series.

It will be an interesting final week of the regular season with four teams - Cal State LA, Chico State, Cal State San Marcos and Cal State San Bernardino - vying for the final three spots in the six-team CCAA Tournament, which will be held at Reeder Field on May 7-10.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay have already clinched spots.

Cal State LA and Chico State are tied for fourth, one game ahead of Cal State San Marcos and Cal State San Bernardino with four games remaining. The Golden Eagles and Wildcats are four games out of first and three games out of third.

The Golden Eagles will finish the regular season at Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Chico State will host Stanislaus State and Cal State San Marcos will be at Cal State San Bernardino. San Francisco State will finish at Cal State Monterey Bay.

All series will begin on Thursday and conclude on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles struggled to hold down the Coyotes on Sunday and things really fell apart in the middle innings. Isaiah Marquez scored on a wild pitch to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 first-inning lead and then he belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to give them a 4-3 advantage.

Cal State LA starter AJ Moreno held the lead with a scoreless fourth inning, but the Coyotes put up four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. A five-run sixth inning and nine-run seventh inning broke the game open.

Cal State San Bernardino collected 19 hits in the game, including a three-run home run from Tank Rodriguez. Jeremy Giesegh went 3-for-6 with five RBI, while Jacob Mejia was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Cal State LA also issued 12 walks and hit five batters.

Matt Romero tossed five shutout innings of relief for the Coyotes, allowing five hits with no walks and six strikeouts, to pick up the win.

Marquez was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Drew Emmons came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI.

Prior to the game, Cal State LA honored AJ Moreno, Drew Porter, Will Schwab, Brayan Nunez, Anthony Lopez, Malik Clayton, Drew Emmons, Joel Martinez, Isaiah Marquez, Anthony Diaz and Javy Espinosa and Senior Day.
