Golden Eagles Shine On Final Day Of CCAA Tourney

SANTA BARBARA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team shot the round of the day Wednesday on the final day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.

The Golden Eagles shot a final round 295, their best round of the tournament and the best round on Wednesday by 12 shots. It was also the best round of the three-day tournament played at the challenging Sandpiper Golf Club. Cal State LA soared past Cal State East Bay and into second place for the championships, matching the best CCAA finish in program history.

Cal State San Marcos won the title for the sixth straight season with a three-day total of 908. Cal State LA, after trailing the Cougars by 20 shots after a tough opening round, sliced that margin in half and was second at 918. Cal State East Bay, which led after the opening round, was third at 926.

Joshlyn Ayala had the low score of the day with a 3-under-par 69 to climb into third place and earn All-Tournament honors. After opening with an 83 in the first round, Ayala was 1-under-par over the final 36 holes to vault into the top three. She had the electrifying eagle on the first hole on Tuesday and she came right back with an even better round on Wednesday.

Ayala had five birdies on the day, including four over her final nine holes. She was solid all day with a birdie on the team's opening hole of the day - the 10th hole - and eight straight pars. She then birdied the 1st hole - her 10th hole of the day, to get to 2-under par.

After taking two bogeys over the next three holes to drop back to even par, Ayala made three birdies in a row on holes 5-8 and closed out her round with a two-putt par.

Cal State LA had three players finish in the top-10 of the tournament.

Sophomore Daniela Andrade had her best round of the tournament with an even-par 72 that enabled her to finish in a tie for sixth. She had three birdies and three bogeys and finished with a score of 229, just two shots out of fifth and a spot on the All-Tourney team.

Sophomore Sarah Amaya completed an outstanding tournament and finished in a tie for eighth at 232. She had a birdie on the par-5 13th hole for the third straight day and was even-par through the first nine holes before finishing with a 77.

Cal State LA seniors Morgan Sjoerdsma and Harley Richardson, playing in their final CCAA Championship, finished tied for 16th with three-day totals of 239. Sjoerdsma had an up-and-down round of 79 that included four birdies. Richardson birdied her first hole of the day on the 10th and finished with a 77.

Cal State San Marcos' Madison Murr won the individual title by one shot over teammate Makenna Cabardo. Ayala finished just four shots back.

Cal State LA will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on April 29. The Golden Eagles were ranked sixth in the most recent regional rankings.
