Ayala Puts The Eagle In Golden Eagles On Tuesday

SANTA BARBARA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team enjoyed a much better day at the office on Tuesday in the second round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.

The Golden Eagles were 25 shots better in Round 2 than they were in Round 1 after shooting 299 at the Sandpiper Golf Club. Cal State LA had the second-best round of the day and closed to within eight shots of second-place Cal State East Bay. Cal State San Marcos had the best round of the day on Tuesday, a 297, and has opened up a 14-shot lead heading into Wednesday's final round.

Cal State LA's Joshlyn Ayala got the Golden Eagles off to a tremendous start on Tuesday with the shot of the tournament so far. She knocked in a wedge from about 70 yards away for the first eagle of the tourney. She hit into an elevated green and said afterward she knew it was a good shot, but didn't know it actually went in until family members behind the green celebrated the outstanding shot.

Ayala shot a 2-over-par 74 and had Cal State LA's best score on the day. She improved her score from Monday by nine shots.

Improvement was the name of the game for the Golden Eagles as four of their five players had better scores on Tuesday than they did on Monday.

Sarah Amaya leads the Golden Eagles through two rounds and is tied for seventh at 155. She shot a second-round of 75 that featured three consecutive birdies on holes 15-17 to help Cal State LA pull closer to Cal State East Bay. Amaya also had a birdie on the opening hole and is second in the tournament field with six birdies over the first two rounds.

Ayala and Daniela Andrade are tied for 12th place with a 36-hole score of 157. Ayala had a second-round of 74 that was nine shots better than her opening round. In addition to her opening eagle, she also had birdies on the par-4 seventh hole, the par-3 11th hole and the par-4 14th hole that got her to 2-under for her round.

Andrade followed up her opening round of 78 with a 79 on Tuesday that featured a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole. She closed out her round with three consecutive pars.

Morgan Sjoerdsma made an eight-shot improvement from the opening round and had a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday. Her round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole and 13 pars. She moved up into a tie for 14th at 158.

Harley Richardson had the biggest improvement from the opening round, lowering her score by 12 shots with a 3-over-par 75. She is in a tie for 19th place with a score of 162.
