CHICO -- Cal State LA's baseball team used some late-inning heroics to earn an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Chico State.
The Golden Eagles got a game-tying two-run home run from
Brayan Nunez in the seventh inning and a go-ahead pinch-hit single from
Ben Lee with two outs in the 11th inning of a big 3-2 win over the Wildcats on Saturday at Nettleton Stadium. Cal; State LA (22-20, 19-13 CCAA) moved into sole possession of fourth place in a tightly-packed conference race, one game ahead of Chico State (25-16, 18-14 CCAA).
While the Golden Eagles didn't produce much offense on Saturday, they didn't need much thanks to outstanding pitching from
AJ Moreno and
Ismael Quintero. Moreno allowed only two runs over 7 2/3 innings in his longest outing of the season and Quintero worked the final 3 1/3 innings with only one hit allowed to improve to 5-1. Once the Golden Eagles took the lead in the 11th, Quintero retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning, including the final two by strikeout.
Cal State LA couldn't get anything generated against Chico State starter Marco Ibarra, who carried a shutout into the seventh, allowing only a first inning double to
Malik Clayton over the first six innings.Â
In the seventh, though,
Gilbert Morales walked to start the inning and Nunez quickly tied it with a one-out, two-run home run to left.
In the 11th inning, Chavez singled with one out and Morales drew another important walk. Then, with two outs, Lee came on as a pinch hitter and singled on an 0-1 pitch to left to drive in Chavez with what turned out to be the winning run. Cal State LA ultimately left the bases loaded, but Quintero and the Golden Eagles only needed one run to win the game.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino at 6 p.m.
