LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got some outstanding pitching and a clutch eighth-inning rally to pick up an important win in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles overcame a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning thanks to run-scoring singles by
Ben Lee and
Malik Clayton to tie the game and a go-ahead sacrifice fly by
Cesar Chavez in a 4-3 win over the Coyotes Friday night at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (23-20, 20-13 CCAA) remains in fourth place in the CCAA.
Ismael Quintero pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fourth save of the season and
Kadyn Victorian came up with one of the best defensive plays of the season, a miraculous catch of a foul down the left-field line for the first out of the inning. Quintero then got the second out via strikeout and Chavez made a nice running grab of a foul ball down the right-field line to end it.
Moises Escobedo picked up the first win of his Cal State LA career with 2 1/3 innings of outstanding relief.
Isaac Quintero got the start for the Golden Eagles and he was strong over 5 1/3 innings, allowing only five hits and two runs in his longest outing of the season. He got out of a tricky situation in the first inning, giving up a pair of walks and a run-scoring double by Jeremy Giesegh with only one out, but he stranded runners at second and third to keep the score at 1-0.
Cal State San Bernardino (24-19, 16-17 CCAA) got a tremendous start from Dylan O'Connor, who allowed only three hits and one run over seven innings. The only hit he gave up through the first five innings was a solo home run by
Alberto Prado.
The Coyotes, after taking the 1-0 lead in the first, increased their advantage to 2-0 in the fourth on a solo home run by Tank Rodriguez. Prado's eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth made it 2-1.
The Coyotes took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a two-out, run-scoring single by Wyatt Hall.
Cal State LA then came to life in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead. Victorian and
Isaiah Marquez started the rally with singles and Lee scored Victorian with a run-scoring single to left-center. Prado then advanced the runners with a beautiful sacrifice bunt to set up the game-winning sequence.
Clayton singled to left to score Marquez and Chavez gave the Golden Eagles the lead with his sacrifice fly that drove in Lee.
The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday that has been pushed back to a 2 p.m. start.
