LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team endured a long and unsuccessful day at the ballpark on Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino.
Heavy morning rain caused the start of the doubleheader to be pushed to 4 p.m. and the Golden Eagles fell to the power-hitting Coyotes in both ends of the doubleheader, 15-5 and 6-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association contests.
Cal State LA (23-22, 20-15 CCAA) slipped into a tie for fourth place in the CCAA with Chico State, two games clear of Cal State San Bernardino (26-19, 18-17 CCAA) and Cal State San Marcos with five games remaining. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.Â
The Coyotes hit six home runs in the doubleheader, including four in the opener, while the Golden Eagles managed only four doubles, all in the first game, with no home runs.
The Golden Eagles found themselves in an early 8-0 hole in the opener and couldn't recover. Dom Dominguez hit a two-run home run and Tank Rodriguez hit a three-run home run to highlight an eight-run second inning for the Coyotes. Daryl Ruiz and Jeremy Giesegh hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth.
Isaiah Marquez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Alberto Prado was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Jonathan Manuel pitched four effective innings of relief for the Golden Eagles, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out five.
Jojo Duran allowed five hits and two runs over five innings to get the win for the Coyotes.
Cal State LA cut a 5-0 deficit in the nightcap to 5-3 in the fifth inning, but couldn't get any closer in the seven-inning game.
Brandon Gutierrez allowed a pair of unearned runs in the second inning and a three-run home run to Tyler Janneste in the third, but battled back and pitched a complete game.
He seemed to give the Golden Eagles a spark after getting out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fourth without allowing a run to keep the game at 5-0. He allowed a leadoff single and back-to-back walks to open the frame, but
Alberto Prado fielded grounders at first and nailed runners at home for two outs and Gutierrez induced a routine fly ball to center to end the threat.
Cal State LA came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by
Javy Espinoza and a run-scoring by
Cesar Chavez and got to within 5-3 after
Kadyn Victorian singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Ruiz hit his second home run of the day in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 6-3 and Ivan Rodriguez finished his complete game by getting the final out with two runners on base in the bottom of the inning.
Marquez and Chavez had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will conclude the series with Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday with a single game starting at noon. Senior Day ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m.
