LONG BEACH -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams had success Saturday at Long Beach State's Beach Opener, highlighted by a meet record in the women's long jump.
Jonon Young, who will be competing in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships next week, opted for competition instead of rest on Saturday and has a meet record to show for it. She set a new season's best with a mark of 20-6.25 on her third attempt. At that point, Young did choose rest and bypassed her final three attempts, although she didn't take the rest of the day completely off.
She hustled over to the 100 meters, where she ran a 12.37 while finishing 18th overall and then called it a day.
Young will be defending her national championship in the indoor triple jump next Saturday.
Young's meet record was shared by Concordia's Jasmyn Crawford, who also jumped 20-6.25 on Saturday. The duo broke the previous meet record of 19-10.25 set by USC's Courtney Corrin in 2018. Crawford will also be competing in next week's Indoor Track & Field Championships in the long jump. Like Young, she passed on her final three attempts and then competed in the 100 meters, which she won in 11.71.
Destiny Moedano had an eighth-place finish in the 400 and
Paula Romo finished ninth in the 400 hurdles.
Drew Hill finished fourth in the men's 100 with a time of 10.51 and Gabriel Pearson was fourth in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 55.23.
Cal State LA will return to outdoor competition on March 22 at the Ron and Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational.
