Golden Eagles Earn Doubleheader Split On Saturday

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team bounced back from a disappointing start to its day on Saturday with a much-needed win before it ended.

After dropping the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader to Stanislaus State, 8-1, the Golden Eagles rebounded for a 5-4 victory over the Warriors in the nightcap to earn the split. Brandon Gutierrez, the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, had another strong outing and freshman Ismael Quintero got the final four outs in the nightcap for the Golden Eagles.

Gilbert Morales had the big hit of the second game, connecting for a three-run home run to break a 0-0 tie in the third inning. He added a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and drove in four of the five runs for the Golden Eagles.

Gutierrez didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and it was a three-run home run by Jacob Baker that tied the game at 4-4. Malik Clayton then drove in what proved to be the winning run in the sixth with a two-out single to score Kai Penuelas.

After Gutierrez issued a one-out single and a two-out walk in the sixth, Quintero came on to get the final out of the sixth and the last three outs in the seventh for his first save.

Gutierrez improved to 2-1 with the win. After allowing only one hit in a shutout over Cal State San Marcos last week, he gave up only two hits on Saturday. He walked five and struck out five.

Quintero worked around a two-out walk in the seventh and didn't allow a hit in his 1 1/3 innings.

Clayton went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Morales was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Ethan Gonzalez also had two hits.

In the opener, Cal State LA fell behind 7-0 after four innings and managed only a solo home run from Ethan Gonzalez on offense. AJ Moreno got the start and gave up seven hits and three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. A pair of costly errors led to four unearned runs. He walked two and struck out seven.

Anthony Diaz pitched well in relief and gave up only one run on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Kadyn Victorian had two of Cal State LA's five hits in the game.

Cal State LA will conclude the series at Stanislaus State with a single game starting at noon.
