Golden Eagles Fall In Extra Innings In Opener

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team went extra innings in a California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener, only this time the result was not what the Golden Eagles wanted.

One week after edging Cal State San Marcos in 13 innings, the Golden Eagles dropped an 11-inning decision to Stanislaus State, 5-4, at Warrior Field. Cal State LA (5-10, 2-3 CCAA) took a 4-2 lead in the third inning, but Stanislaus State (9-10, 4-5 CCAA) blanked the Golden Eagles over the final eight innings and manufactured a run in the bottom of the 11th for the win.

Carson Panarisi went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead a 12-hit Cal State LA attack. Malik Clayton and Ben Lee also drove in runs for the Golden Eagles.

Alejandro Huezo started for the Golden Eagles and allowed 11 hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Jared Robles worked 1 2/3 hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Joel Martinez tossed three scoreless innings before Stanislaus State got a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt and a one-out single in the 11th to win it.

Austin Balentine gave up four hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Warriors, who then got a combined 8 2/3 innings of scoreless relief from Noah Chelberg, Cameron Rosen and Zach Geiss to win. Geiss pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 on the season.

After Stanislaus State scored twice in the second to take a 2-0 lead, Cal State LA struck for four runs in the third. Lee singled in Ethan Gonzalez and Clayton collected an infield single to drive in Kadyn Victorian to tie the game. Panarisi singled up the middle to drive in Lee and Clayton to make it 4-2.

The Warriors tied it with two runs in the sixth. JD Madrigal homered to make it 4-3 and Jacob Baker doubled to left-center to tie the game.

That's how it stayed until the 11th when the Warriors pushed across the winning run.

The two teams will continue the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
