POMONA - Cal State LA's baseball team put the finishing touches on a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, carrying the momentum of a no-hitter from
Brandon Gutierrez on Saturday, scored four runs in their first at bat on Sunday and went on to beat the Broncos, 11-5, at Scolinos Field. Cal State LA (14-12, 11-5 CCAA) stretched its winning streak to six and moved into second place in the CCAA.Â
The Golden Eagles recorded their first series sweep of Cal Poly Pomona (8-21, 5-15 CCAA) since 2018.Â
Cal State LA scored 42 runs in the series and the only game the Golden Eagles didn't score 10 runs came in a 7-1 win highlighted by the Gutierrez no-hitter.
The Golden Eagles picked up 12 hits on Sunday, including a home run from
Alberto Prado. They scored four runs in the first inning and added six more in the third to break the game open.Â
Bryan Nunez had two hits, including a three-run double in the first inning.
Isaiah Marquez,
Cesar Chavez,
Kai Penuelas and
Kadyn Victorian also had two hits each.
AJ Moreno, a former pitcher at Cal Poly Pomona, had his best start of the season and picked up his first win with the Golden Eagles. He allowed four runs over six innings and pitched into the seventh inning.
Alejandro Morales gave up three hits and one run over 1 1/3 innings and
Joel Martinez finished up with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
Chavez picked up an infield single to give Cal State LA an early 1-0 lead and Nunez followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 4-0.
The Broncos scored once in the bottom of the first, but
Jack Esguerra's two-run double started a six-run outburst in the third that gave the Golden Eagles a 10-1 lead. Victorian singled in a run, Marquez singled in a run and Prado hit a two-run home run before the inning was over.
Victorian singled in a run in the seventh.
Cal State LA will return home and open a four-game series against Sonoma State on Friday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
