Golden Eagles Make It Seven Straight With Friday Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team made a triumphant return to Reeder Field on Friday night and kept the good times rolling.

The Golden Eagles got a pair of home runs from Kadyn Victorian and some strong outings from five pitchers to beat Sonoma State, 17-5, in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series. Cal State LA (15-12, 12-5 CCAA) won its seventh straight game and moved into first place in the conference standings.

Sonoma State (7-22, 4-17 CCAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Evan Merz, but the Golden Eagles cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first and took the lead for good with a five-run second inning. Cal State LA also scored four times in the fourth and three times in the fifth and went on to score a season-high 17 runs.

Anthony Lopez was the first of the five Cal State LA pitchers and he went three innings, giving up three hits and two runs while walking one and striking out four. Isaac Quintero was next, going 2 1/3 innings and give up one earned run to pick up his first victory. Elijah Bobo got the final two outs of the sixth inning with the bases loaded, Moises Escobedo tossed two scoreless innings and also got out of a bases-loaded situation, while Jonathan Manuel struck out two in his one inning of work and stranded a pair of baserunners to end it.

Isaiah Marquez had a big game in the leadoff spot for the Golden Eagles, going 4-for-5 with five runs scored. Cesar Chavez had two hits and four RBI, Alberto Prado had two hits and three RBI, Ben Lee had two hits and three runs scored, while Victorian was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Cal State LA had 19 hits altogether.

After the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead, the Golden Eagles made it 2-1 thanks to a run-scoring single by Ethan Gonzalez in the bottom of the first. Victorian hit a go-ahead two-run home run that started the game-turning five-run rally in the second. Prado singled in a pair of runs to extend the lead and Gonzalez doubled in another run.

Chavez had a sacrifice fly and Carson Panarisi had a two-run double to spark a four-run uprising in the fourth inning that made it 10-2. Cal State LA added three more runs in the fifth.

Chavez added a two-run double as part of a three-run seventh inning and Victorian added his second home run, a solo shot, in the eighth.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Sonoma State beginning at 1 p.m.
